Population growth in Tunisia between 1921 and 2024

Between 1921 and 2024, or about a century, the population of Tunisia increased sixfold, from 2 million to nearly 12 million inhabitants. After independence, the first census in Tunisia conducted in 1956 recorded a total population of 3,783,200 inhabitants. Then, from 1956 to 1994, the population increased at an annual growth rate of approximately 2%. Thus, twenty years after independence, the Tunisian population had almost doubled, reaching 55,88,200 inhabitants in 1975. Nine years later, in 1984, the population recorded an increase of approximately 2 million, reaching 6,966,200 inhabitants, with a record annual growth rate of 2.48%, the highest since 1956. Subsequently, although the population continued to grow, the rate of this growth gradually slowed. Since 2004, Tunisia's population has continued to grow at a slower pace, with an average annual growth rate of around 1%. In 2014, it had a population of around 11 million. According to the latest population and housing census in 2024, Tunisia now has a population of 11,972,169, recording an average annual growth rate of 0.87% compared to 2014.
