During the colonial period, the foreign population represented approximately 10% of the resident population in Tunisia. However, after independence and the departure of the French, the number of foreigners declined, from 341,473 people in 1956 (approximately 9% of the total population) to 66,834 in 1966 (1.5%). After 1966, the foreign population in Tunisia remained relatively stable, with a number of approximately 40,000 individuals, representing approximately 0.5% of the total population. From 2004 onwards, however, an increase was observed: the foreign population reached 53,490 people in 2014, then 66,349 in 2024. Despite this increase, their share in the total population remains relatively low, representing only 0.55% in 2024. Nevertheless, it should be noted that this increase, although apparently modest, has considerable repercussions at the economic and social level.
