The evolution of the sex ratio through the censuses reveals a notable decline, going from 104.5 in 1966 to 97.4 in 2024, thus showing that over time a female supremacy is beginning to take hold. Indeed, until 2004, men were more numerous than women, but this trend was reversed after the 2004 census, in fact the 2014 RGPH recorded 50.2% of women against 49.8% of men. Ten years later, the results of the 2024 census show that this female supremacy is confirmed, women now represent 50.7% of the population against 49.3% for men. Several factors can explain this shift, in particular the gap in life expectancy between men and women, which is on average greater than four years; the decline in the fertility rate, which is now below the generation replacement threshold; as well as international migration, which is generally marked by male predominance. This growing female predominance, however, raises major planning issues, particularly in the areas of health and social security, which should now take this demographic reality into consideration.
